I know most males have a certain anmount of "smegma"...but when is it important to have a boy examined by a vet. One of our young fellows has discharge aound the exterior of his penis but inside the sheath...it does have an odor....any experiences anyone?

Sounds like a balanopostitis (sp?!) which is an inflammation or infection inside the sheath. You will need to take him to a veterinarian for treatment. Saline/gentocin flushes work nicely for this, and your boy may need to go on oral antibiotics if there is an odor to the discharge. I have successfully treated this before with cephalexin, but go with your veterinarian's advice. Good luck!
