Color Genetics

I have a chocolate female who has produced two outsatnding full brothers from two different litters. One carries yellow and the other doesn't. I am wondering is their anyway that she doesn't carry yellow. I doubt it can skip a generation, but am not sure and was wondering what anyone else knows about this as I often have trouble making heads or tails of the finer points of coat color genetics.

Re: Color Genetics

It depends on the color of the sire and what he carries--not just her genetics. If the sire carries yellow, then a percentage of the offspring would carry yellow whether the dam carries yellow or not.

The best explanation around is on the web site for Blue Knight Labradors. It tells you all the possible combinations.

Re: Color Genetics

Why not get the DNA color test done and be sure? You can contact VetGen at www.vetgen.com.
Its been a couple years since I sent them samples so I don't recall what they charge. Perhaps someone else does.
