Missed Breedings

I did two consecutive breedings with the same 2 dogs. The girl never had a litter, she is 2 and 1/2 yrs. old. The boy is 2 years old, not proven. Did AIs and natural both times. The progesterone levels were good for my girl, I had the boys sperm count done and thats Okay. Any suggestions about what may have gone wrong?

Re: Missed Breedings

Did you have a thyroid panel done on your girl? Also a culture when she came into heat? Just something to start with.

Re: Re: Missed Breedings

Who interpreted the progesterone levels and were they really bred on the correct day??

Re: Re: Missed Breedings

Didn't do a thyroid panel, didn't know about it. Sent culture to repo in Ohio with blood serum. I'm learning anything you can help me with is greatly appreciated.

Re: Re: Re: Missed Breedings

Levels were sent to repo in Ohio. Came back 2.8ng bred, four days later bred at 18.7ng. If you can help me out, please advise.

Re: Missed Breedings

Just alittle help, it's repro like reproduction, not repo like reposession. We had a girl never take to a particular male. Bred to him 3 times. Everything was spot on and done with a repro specialist. He guessed there was something with the girl that attacked the sperm like an antibody. She took fine to any other male we picked.

Re: Missed Breedings

Stud dogs miss on average 17% of the time. That being said, if you've already done two breedings to the same boy, I would probably consider another stud dog next time. Who knows? May just not be a good combo.

Re: Missed Breedings

To Breeder,

We know you never use your name and you dont have anything else to do than correct the ortoghraphy of everybody here.

Get a job or something, and get as far as you can of the computer and out this forum.

We are trying to learn and have friends.

Re: Missed Breedings

how old was she when you first bred her?

Dear Fan,

Please speak for yourself. I would rather be corrected than continue making a mistake. I aspire to speak well and when I speak or spell incorrectly I am happy when someone cares enough to straighten me out. I love my spell and grammar checker. I am also grateful when someone tells me my slip is showing or my label is sticking up.

Forever a student

Re: Re: Missed Breedings

I am curious where the 17% miss figure comes from. We have had stud dogs for almost 30 years and can count on one hand the misses we have had. We have 5 to 6 studs usually and most have been used a minimum of 20 times, so I guess I am the exception to the rule of percentiles? I am curious to know where they got that data from?

To Fan: Looks like you have more than enough time on your hands too.
Just for the record, there are MANY different people that post under the name "Breeder", it's not exactly a seldom used term....

Re: Missed Breedings

The male may have Brucellosis...rare, or another bacteria..can't think of the name, am looking it up for ya, I do remember it is treated with Tetracycline. If you look at the sperm under a microscope, it may be "swimming" but not viable due to the bacteria...shoot, I'm looking it up.......now, be right back.

Re: Missed Breedings

You probably did not do anything wrong however......
Next time A, I would do a culture on your girl as soon as she comes into season. My guess would be that there might be an issue deadly to any semen that tries to make the trip.
B, Pick a different proven stud dog.
C, Find a reputable repro vet and do a surgical implant.
Good luck, after two misses it is time to do something different.

Re: Re: Missed Breedings

I recently had an outside stud dog miss 3 of my girls in a row. We put him on 10 days of Baytril and re-bred 1 of the 3 and she had pups. She had a split cycle, and I didn't expect a pregnancy. The repo vet at Cornell handled the breeding.

One of the girls was spayed and found out she probably never would have concieved because of adhesions and scar tissue from a c-section.

There are a lot of reasons for missed conceptions, so you have to be persistant.
