I've been using the home brew for about a year on my dogs without any problems.

The gentian violet is an anti-inflammatory.

The 'pre-made' stuff I use is K-9 Liquid Health Ear Solutions. Ingredients are Isopropyl Alcohol, Boric Acid, Gentian Violet and Colloidal Silver. Also good for hot spots.

i FOUND A LINK FOR PRE-MADE PURPLE STUFF ON WOODHAVEN WEBSITE.

I've used the premade as well as the mix at home and haven't had a problem. Sometimes the alcohol in it can irritate, if there are small open cuts in the ear due to scratching.

In those instances I use witch hazel instead of alcohol in the mix.

I made and use both variations of the purple stuff.

If their ears are red or sore, I use the witch hazel mixture. When the ears are fine and I want to prevent infections from the pool or lake, I use the one with alcohol.
