I am trying to decide what size whelping box to buy.
What size do most of you like?
48 X 48 or 48 X 60?
Not sure how much room to have for the mom and expected 7 pups.
At least that is what the ultrasound predicts!
Thanks for your advice.
48 x 48 is ample room. Even my largest bitch fits in perfectly with a litter this size. Larger, pups may have a harder time scooting to mommy. If I have a larger litter, when they are older I may transfer to a larger whelping box allowing more room, but when they are ready and it's ok to be a further distance from mommy.
I did not find 48 X 48 big enough. I have the 48 X 60 Jonart and love it. The smaller size was not big enough for my large bitch but I did manage ok with it for smaller bitches.
I have a 48 x 60 and my bitch is small. She has 7 puppies and I am glad we chose tomake it the size we did. It doubled as a litter box when the pups were older.
I prefer using the 48x60 size - my feelings are that the extra space allows mom to get situated without squashing a pup.
Also, ultrasounds are great for confirming a pregnancy but leave alot to be desired when it comes to counting puppies. My ultrasound of 4 was 10 live puppies. X-rays are better for counting pups.
