Panacur C revisited--here's what it treats

Asked my veterinarian about Panacur C. Here is what he said:
****************************
Fenbendazole (often abbreviated "FBZ") is used in both large and small animals. In dogs, it is useful against roundworms, hookworms, and the more difficult to treat whipworms. It is effective against the Taenia species of tapeworm but not against the Common tapeworm Dipylidium caninum. It is also effective against Giardia, a protozoan and several species of lungworm and even some flukes.

What this means is that it gets the tapes that are from eating rabbits but not the ones that are the most common from eating fleas. It is hard to tell which one of the tapeworms the dog has. If I remember correctly Panacur works for the common worms in three days of treatment but for tapeworms you need to treat for five days. So it takes more to treat tapes and it only treats one kind of the tapeworms.

****************************
So, if you are sure how your dog got its tapeworms (critter guts versus fleas) then Panacur might be just the trick. If you know the infection is from ingesting fleas, or you aren't sure, then you need to use Droncit which gets ALL types of tapes.

Thought people would like to see the explanation.
