Causes of Elbow Dysplasia

As a result of our recent discussions about ED, I have
been researching recent veterinary literature
through the International Veterinary Information Service.
I've found several recent articles about ED, especially
an article called Etiology of Elbow Dysplasia by the
International Elbow Working Group, which was founded in
1989 by a group of veterinarians and dog breeders. The
article discusses genetic influences, environmental,
mechanical, and nutrition influences on four types of
ED--INC, FCP, OCD, and UAP.

If anyone would like me to send them a copy of the article,
please contact me privately at www.highgarthlabs@aol.com
Although this is a fairly technical article designed
for a professional audience, I think breeders might
find useful information.

As I read this and other articles, I was impressed by
how much in the dark we still are about ED. I could
not really see compelling research to support the
notion that the causes of bilateral and unilateral
ED are significantly different.

At the same time, I could not really see compelling
evidence that they are *not* significantly different.

The methods we currently use for screening (one
x-ray view of each elbow) don't really provide enough
data to do good research. Just because ED is not
visible on this one view does not mean that ED does
not exist. The IEWG is recommending more views that
show more parts of the elbow.

Also some researchers make a compelling argument for
evaluating elbows between 4-6 months of age because
some types of ED can be repaired before damage
occurs.
