WA state breeder bill dies in committee -BUT...

It appears that all pet bills in the Washington State Legislature session
ended today died back in committees. Now let me report on this. The
original bill in this state was a little too hard. The committees made
several good amendments to the bills easing up on the hobby / show breeders.
The bill finally came to a point that I believe it was really pointed at pet
stores and puppy mill dealers. Most of the requirements that remained in
the bill, I already include in my sale agreement. The only modification
that I would have had to made my agreement was to extend my hereditary and
genetics guarantee from 12 month to 18 months. That is all a moot point now
though.

After reading the notes from the committees I found one very important
factor. The Washington State Veterinary Association. I believe that is
where the secret lies. The committee members really listened to the
professionals. It only makes sense. Most law makers have a tendency to be
Professionals and many are members of the Bar Association and practice law.
Therefore, they tend to gravitate towards other professional
recommendations.

So I will recommend for anyone in a legislative battle. Seek out the local
Vet Association and push them to support your cause.

I fully expect to see this bill back next year considering it originally
made it out of committees only to be sent back for amendments. If they iron
out a few more wrinkles, I believe that this law will pass. Possibly with
my support. Remember, if you can't stop the legislation then you had better
make it something you can live with! If you sit on your hands and don't
stand up to be heard forever hold your peace.
