Warning to all show people and people traveling with pets

Subject: Warning to all show people and people traveling with pets

Warning to all show people and people traveling through the states of Georgia, North Carolina and S Carolina.
The above states will confiscate your dogs if traveling through them and they stop you and you can't show proof of vaccination for rabies.
They stopped people returning from the Perry shows and took their dogs, they called in their lawyer and the dogs were returned but they were fined $600. For not having paperwork with them.
Also, the state of Georgia can euthinize immediately.
Please make all of your friends, families and fellow show people aware of this more then likely PETA based problem

Re: Warning to all show people and people traveling with pets

That is awful. Thank you for posting. Had not heard anything like this.

Re: Warning to all show people and people traveling with pets

FYI, this was on another forum and according to people who live & travel in these areas, is bogus.

Re: Warning to all show people and people traveling with pets

No idea about that particular rumor, but technically, everyone is supposed to have their dogs' rabies info when traveling, particularly across state lines. I just keep all that info in the car for any dogs that travel to shows.

Re: Warning to all show people and people traveling with pets

We live in SC and travel all the time with our dogs and NEVER have had anything like this happen.

Re: Warning to all show people and people traveling with pets

Also, they may NOT euthanize your dog immediately. That only applies to strays picked up. If your property is confiscated, they have to go through due process (ie:court) before that can happen.

Re: Warning to all show people and people traveling with pets

Give the original poster a giant spoon 'cause I think they are just stirring the pot. This is obviously bogus. This isn't true in Louisville and we have the worst dog law in the country.

Re: Warning to all show people and people traveling with pets

Would the person who posted this please say where you received your information from ? We have never heard of anyone being stopped or questioned.

Re: Warning to all show people and people traveling with pets

i live in ga,,never had this happen or heard of it,,,but i will try and research this..not sure true

"From the Georgia Canine Coalition. Permission to crosspost.

There has been an e-mail circulating stating that someone was stopped on there way from the Perry, Georgia Dog shows, their dogs confiscated and that they had to pay a fine to have the dogs returned. The e-mail further stated that your dogs would be taken if you were stopped and could not show a rabies certificate in GA, NC, and SC. While the Georgia Canine Coalition cannot speak for NC and GA, the Georgia Canine Coalition can state that the above did not happen and is not true for the state of Georgia.

I talked with the Director of Animal Protection for the State of Georgia this morning, she assures me that the above did not happen. She further told me that if you are traveling through Georgia you do not have to have a rabies certificate. If someone moves to Georgia, then they will be required to show that their dogs are vaccinated against rabies.

While it is a good idea to travel with proof of rabies vaccination, it is not a requirement to travel through Georgia with a rabies certificate.

Re: Warning to all show people and people traveling with pets

Negative.

Anytime a person enters Georgia with a dog(s), they are required to have proof of rabies vax.

Fyi: show people and people traveling with pets

3. IMPORTATION AND INTERSTATE MOVEMENT OF ANIMALS:
(a) INTERNATIONAL. CDC regulates the importation of dogs and cats into the United States. Importers of
dogs must comply with rabies vaccination requirements (42 CFR, Part 71.51
[http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dq/animal.htm]) and complete CDC form 75.37
(http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dq/pdf/cdc7537-05-24-04.pdf). The appropriate health official of the state of destination should be notified within 72 hours of the arrival into his or her jurisdiction of any imported dog required to be placed in confinement under the CDC regulation. Failure to comply with these confinement requirements should be promptly reported to the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine, CDC (telephone: 404-639-3441).

Federal regulations alone are insufficient to prevent the introduction of rabid animals into the United
States (18,19). All imported dogs and cats are subject to state and local laws governing rabies and should be currently vaccinated against rabies in accordance with this compendium. Failure to comply with state or local requirements should be referred to the appropriate state or local official.
(b) INTERSTATE. Before interstate movement (including commonwealths and territories) dogs, cats,
ferrets, and horses should be currently vaccinated against rabies in accordance with the compendium’s
recommendations (see Part I. B.1.). Animals in transit should be accompanied by a currently valid
NASPHV Form 51, Rabies Vaccination Certificate (http://www.nasphv.org). When an interstate health
certificate or certificate of veterinary inspection is required, it should contain the same rabies vaccination
information as Form 51.
