Re: question from "tools"

From my experiance, the above reply is more the exception than the rule. The person who bred her mild dysplasic bitch to a good probably was very lucky. Not just with the first generation results, but as well as the generations that followed.
I had a nice winning bitch who was OFA prelimed Mild Dysplasia. She was oustanding, so we kept her hoping we could get lucky and somehow she might pass at 2. Her sire, and grandsire were OFA excellant, total of 6 OFA excellants in 3 generations, she was from lines that had and produced sound hips. With careful exercise, swimming, and walking we muscled her up, had an ortho specialist who's read for the OFA do the x-rays. He told me 60/40 they would not pass. 4 weeks later results came, she was OFA Fair. Couldn't believe it, I called the OFA and talked to Dr. Kellar to find what the 3 readings were, Mild Dysplasia, Fair, and Fair. Was not going to breed her if she did not pass, I still knew I had to be very careful with what dogs I took to her still.
Now present time, she has been bred to 2 OFA excellant dogs with good records for producing sound hips. Both litters there were several issues. long story short, it was a lot of time, trouble, and expense. The one daughter from her that passed her hips, also taken to an OFA excellant sire, produced one girl with severe dysplasic hips as well. Needless to say, that girl was retired, and the line scrapped. All I can tell you is genetics can be cruel and unfair sometimes. A combination of less than desirable genes takes place and the results aren't favorable, worst yet that combination can sometimes haunt for generations to come. If I could go back and do things differently, and taken the advice of breeder friends who have been down that same road, I wouldn't of bred her and saved myself alot of heartache.

Re: question from "tools"

What about the other puppies from those breedings? The ones you didn't keep? Did their families ever encounter HD in those puppies?

What does your puppy contract say about HD?

Re: question from "tools"

I had a great girl that was mild. Waited 6 mos. did her again. A year again. All the same. She won at specialtys but I was not going to take a chance to place pups in family homes that might break down. Just not worth it. So after alot of time and money, spayed and placed her in a great home. Know we gamble everytime we breed, but at least, lets keep the odds in our favor.
