Re: Looking for a good fish base food, grain free?

Nature's Domain Salmon and Sweet Potato-Grain Free
My dogs are on it, doing great and they love it!
Price is reasonable too!
I buy it at Costco and a 35 lb bag cost about $30.
I have tried other much more expensive foods and find that this food is a very good find.
You also might want to check out the site dogfoodadvisor.com which rates many dog foods.
Good luck!

Wish I could get it in the Pacific Northwest. When I asked the manager of my Costco, he said it is not offered out here. Darn. I use Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream for one dog and she is doing great!

Maybe I should start just grain free first?

You have me thinking Kim, maybe he doesn't do well on fish I actually wanted to try a grain free food, but thought fish would be better for her coat.

Re: Maybe I should start just grain free first?

I am going to be switching to Blue Buffalo fish :)

Re: Maybe I should start just grain free first?

Hi,
Well.. I just wondered, sometimes we think certain ingredients are better for our dogs.. but your dog may just not tolerate the fish well. What was your dog eating previously and why do you feel you need to change it?
You can get all the good benefits that Fish offer by giving your dog Salmon oil as a supplement either in liquid on the food or in capsules.

Evo is a great food but their Grain Free Formulas have considerably higher protein than the 27% you mentioned you were looking for.

? how you came up with the numbers for Protein/ fat? And what about Carbohydrate? Grain free does not mean Carb free necessarily. PP Selects is not a grain free food.

I guess you may need to play around with different foods to find the one that your dog does well on.

Re: Maybe I should start just grain free first?

Taste of the Wild (3 flavors, one fish-based); Before Grain (Merrick)- Salmon, Bison, or Chicken; Acana Pacifica (fish-based), Grasslands, or Prairie Harvest

Must be confusing me for another poster? I did not say anything about 27%. I said I like to stay in the same protein/fat ratio that performance is, which is 30/20. And the reason being is it seemed to work for her activity level. What is the research and benefits of high (40%) protein levels compared to the usual run of the mill kibble that is about 22/12? I have never tried a higher level of protein I see Origen is around 40/18. I can get the Acana brand locally at two stores, they are 33/18. Maybe before trying fish we will try the Wild Prairie or Grasslands formula, since she hated the PP selects salmon. Has anyone used Acana with success?

Thank you everyone for your input, writing everything down!

Re: Maybe I should start just grain free first?

I've been using Canidae Grain Free All Life Stages and have had fabulous results. They have a fish based one as well but right now the meat one is doing a great job here.

Re: Maybe I should start just grain free first?

I have not tried this food...but have heard many good things about it....Petcurean "Now" is grain free.....it is a Canadian based company with very high standards. They make a puppy food that is much lower in protein than most of the grain free puppy foods. They also have Petcurean "GO' which does have a small amount of grains.....one is Salmon and oatmeal....single protein and carb. for allergic dogs. I think the food is worth looking into....I don't know the prices or the availablity.

Re: Maybe I should start just grain free first?

oops.. you are right. That was a different post with the 27% protein.
My error.
sorry.

If your dog is doing well on the current ratio of protein to fat.. I would not change that.

Higher protein just seems better for some dogs. My girl gets a higher protein food but she is very active and high energy.

Good luck , sounds like you have lots of good choices.

Re: Looking for a good fish base food, grain free?

Great Life also offers a grain-free line; they also have grain free cookies - using potato starch/flour and tapioca. You might also want to look at Natural Balance.

Re: Looking for a good fish base food, grain free?

Most of my dogs are on Acana Wild Prairie. It is grain free, 33% Protein, 18% Fat, and is made from Chicken, Egg, and Fish Proteins. I do have 2 girls who do not do as well with chicken and they are on Acana Pacifica which is grain free, all Fish Proteins and it is 33% Protein and 17% Fat. My dogs range from 10 months to 12 years and all are doing well on this food.

Re: Looking for a good fish base food, grain free?

Acana Pacifica or Orijin Six Fish. Top choices in my opinion, have fed both to a chicken intolerant pup/now dog, she never has a problem unless she snitches chicken food from somewhere else.

Re: Looking for a good fish base food, grain free?

My boy is doing great on the Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diets line. I'm assuming you know the PP Selects isn't grain free. Or at least it wasn't when I was feeding it 3 years ago.

Re: Looking for a good fish base food, grain free?

You may want to check out Honest Kitchen. They have a few different varieties.

Re: Looking for a good fish base food, grain free?

I have one of mine on California Natural Herring and Sweet Potato. Does have barley and oatmeal in it. 21% protein, 11% fat. My boy has alergies and is doing really well on this food!

It's not at my Costco either. :-(

Re: Looking for a good fish base food, grain free?

On the recommendation of a veterinary allergy specialist, I put my allergy prone girl on Wellness Fish and Sweet Potato. It has limited ingredients, and you can get sweet potato treats for them so they aren't on grain based treats. I have found sweet potato treats made in the US online. Or if you are talented in the kitchen, you could make your own. My dogs love them.

Re: Looking for a good fish base food, grain free?

Thanks everyone what a great list. I spent an hour talking with the woman at my local independently owned pet specialty shop thats been around for 20 years... after telling the woman about my girl and negative response to the proplan selects salmon, she recommended a duck (she called it a 'cool' meat source?) and potato kibble instead of salmon to start. Many are not at the protein/fat ratio I prefer, but Taste of the Wild Wetlands formula is 32/18. It does have some chicken in it, but I will try it and see how she does. If I do not get the results I am looking for I will see if the Pacific Stream makes her sick.
