any thoughts on this

15 mos old pup in a pet home..owner called to say dog had red itchy feet, one ear inflamed and gunk coming from his eyes. Brought him to the vet who said it was an environmental allergic reaction to something-put him on anti histamines and eye drops. Two weeks later the dog is not responding too well, one eye is better but other is not and now he has the runs..back to vet who put him on I/D, metronidazole , ear flush and ointment and temaril.

Two mos before this started vet put him on Science Diet for sensitive stomach as he had a few episodes here and there with loose stools in the past (was being fed PP shredded and that is when the stool issue started) Numerous fecals were sent out and always negative.

Could the new issues be food related? Has anyone had food issues present like this?
Where would you go from here? See if this resolves with new protocol and if so what would you feed..

If this doesn't work he will see an allergist.

Oddly enough since he was fasting from last night to today his eye cleared up-food related?

TIA

Re: any thoughts on this

If he is in the rainy part of the country I wouldn't be surprised of his symptoms, the wet weather is causing high levels of mold spores in the air and even the littlest of my dogs who spend the least amount of time outside (by choice) is licking her feet.
My best suggestion is look on Jean Dodd's site and look into getting an allergy panel done there, it will clear it up for you and hopefully this boy.

In the mean time this boy needs some probiotics9and some enzymes would help too) to restore his intestinal tract, remember when healthy it blocks the larger protein molecules from entering the blood stream, when the intestines are weakened it will allow all kinds of things to go through. And when strong it will help his immune system, so even if it is environmental it will help him fight it, and may be less affected. It is our largest line of defense!!.

If he were my dog I would continue with the antihistamine and eye drops, and give him the flagyl to reduce the inflammation in his bowels. Starting him on a new food that does not have a protein source he's been fed before and try to go without grains, potato is less likley to cause an allergic reaction than say rice which has one of the higher rates of food allergy.
And the simplest of things, have the owners wash and dry the dogs feet when he goes outdoors!!!

Re: any thoughts on this

A eye specialist can help in these odd cases. They can pinpoint the cause of such symptoms that go together with the eye issues.

Re: any thoughts on this

I am not discounting environmental causes as they ARE usually the culprit, but if the food has been crappy (Shreds and Science Diet) I would put the dog on one of the simple foods like Cal Natural and then deal with the symptoms as necessary.

Re: any thoughts on this

My older boy also had issues...skin, eyes,etc...on Science Diet. I switched him to Diamond Natural Lamb & Rice and no issues since.

Re: any thoughts on this

I had nothing but issues with the Shredded formula of Pro Plan as well.

I'd recommend a food switch and see if that helps.

Re: any thoughts on this

Why not try first giving him some hamburger and rice when he first starts eating again today/tomorrow, then get a bag of Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach and add in a half cup with rice, and then gradually to his normal ration over a day or two and see what happens. The SS&S is Salmon based with no corn and has done wonders for some dogs with minor to medium issues with food.

Re: any thoughts on this

It could be allergies, ie ragweed this time of year, or could be yeast infection

I would find out what to use to treat yeast on the skin // check into using prednisone // and stop fooling around with different foods just feed simple chicken formula or one w/o grain, but I think most of the time the allergies are not so much food related

once he has calmed down you can do an expensive blood work-up for allergies, but he cannot be on meds prior

Re: any thoughts on this

It sounds like allergies to me. I have one that has food allergies. We put her on a "novel protein" and she has been without any meds for bad ears for almost a year. The only novel protein you are going to get will be from your vet, Royal Canin has several perscription hypoallergenic foods. The foods bought in a store really are not novel proteins because all of the foods are processed in the same equipment so residue from other protein sources are still there. I wish I could use a food bought at a store because the prescription food is so very expensive Good luck and hope they find out what is bothering this boy, allergies are so tough.

Re: any thoughts on this

Why not try Orijen - ??

With so many food suggestions or possible environmental allergy thoughts, I would send them off to an allergist.

Allergists are costly but I've found the allergist I use to be amazingly educated and intelligent about other ruling out other causes besides allergies such as auto immune diseases.

I was told by by this allergist and my regular vet, 92% of dog allergies are not food related and usually are environmental. There are medications that work. They could try a food change but if they already did, getting the dog off shredded, that should have cured the problems.

Antihistimines don't work the same in dogs as in humans, not as well is the problem or dogs with allergies would be easier to treat.

I would go with the allergist going by my own experience with my one and only dog ever with allergies and hopefully my last (she was never bred.)

I know exactly where it came from in the pedigree but the breeders in that particular country don't think allergies are a big problem where they live. Well, they are! Having 1 of 7 Labs with allergies costing me several hundred a month in medications discounted and compounded I can say it's alot of work along with particular baths once a week. I considered putting her down when at her worst. The allergist understood why when the pathology came back from skin punches. It was the worst she ever saw in her years of practice.

Try to nip it in the bud before it could become almost uncontrollable. On the right medications, allergic dogs can thrive well but our wallets don't. The poor dog goes through hell if itchie all over their body, it's a pity to see them rip at themselves in bad cases. An anti yeast protocal, yogurt, acidopholous, AC vinegar with the mother and a few other probiotics can't hurt trying. Benadryl hardly works in bad cases.

I was going to suggest a dose pack of steroids but the temaril p has a steroid added. Unfortunately, the steroids only last for the time the dog is on it usually on it plus 7 to 10 days. With trimeprazine along with it, it might work longer but it's a temporary fix unless the dog is going to stay on it forever. All I typed is jmho from a sad experience.

All the more reason never to breed a dog with allergies. It is hereditary.

I hope they come up with a solution for this dog.
