Desperately seeking advise!!!!

Hello all, I have had several readers asking for an update on the seizure puppy. We have named him "Canyon", but my son calls him "Sugar Pups". Gotta love a 4 year old! Canyon will be 7 weeks old on Sunday. We have not had a seizure since October 15th. Please pray I haven't jinxed myself or Canyon. Canyon was only having seizures while he was either nursing or taking the bottle. On October 10th, Canyon had a very bad night with 6 seizures, More seizures in one night then we would have in one week. I believed that he would not make it through the night or I would be putting him down in the morning. The next morning he was still with us and I felt I needed to give him one last ditch effort, so we started feeding gruel. Two and a half weeks is a little too soon, but it was gruel or euthanasia. I was now making homemade formula with goats milk, eggs, yogurt, and Karo syrup. I would mix this formula in with Gerber Rice Baby Cereal. After he got the idea of lapping it up, I began to a finely ground Timberwolf dog food. The transition was slow, but the sooner he was on gruel, the sooner the bottles would go away. And we prayed that the seizures would stop. So the last seizure was on October 15th, 4 weeks ago. Canyon has had several visits to two different veterinarian specialists, one who specializes in seizures and the other in neurology, both are from two different offices. They both agree that he is in great health and that he appears to be a normal puppy, neither think that he will be plagued with a life of seizures and medications.
Nobody can fully predict if the seizures are gone permanently but it is a start. At this point, we have not seen any signs that his brain is not fully developed or there is some kind of brain damage, everything else seems to be working correctly. Two separate Rottweiler breeders have evaluated his temperament and all is good. The only complaint is that he is very mouthy pup and nips A LOT! Thats what we get from a singleton, we are slowly nipping (ha ha) this in the butt. Wow, are Rottweilers stubborn. Canyon has bounced into the hearts of many neighbors on our block and one five doors down would like to take him home permanently. So Canyon will soon go to his new home, just not far and close enough that we can watch him grow. His new parents are fully aware of his ruff, I mean rough beginning in this world and they are up for the challenge if the seizures reappear. Then I can finally get back to my Labradors.

Re: Desperately seeking advise!!!!

That's terrific news, I hope Canyon continues to thrive, sounds like he's going to have a great home!

Re: Desperately seeking advise!!!!

Did you have the pup tested for hypoglycemia? I'm telling you most vets know nothing about seizures. They learn more from the "pet public" then they did in vet school.

Re: Desperately seeking advise!!!!

i knnow that sometimes human children are allergic to their mother's milk, and i wonder if this might play a part in his issues......The very best of luck with him for you and for his new family. You did an awesome job.

Re: Desperately seeking advise!!!!

I was thinking something along the same lines that he could have been having a reaction to the milk and/or a hypoglycemic reaction or possibly a vasovagal reaction,it can resemeble a seizure. We had one puppy that did that when we stimulated him to potty, but he many other things wrong with him and we let him go at about 1 1/2 weeks.
It seems coincidental that now that Canyon is on food he's no longer having these symptoms and he's thriving.
Glad to hear he's doing well.

In people, they do look like seizures, you're right. I watched a relative have a vasovagal response from a blood culture test when he saw the bottle filling with his blood. He didn't eat before, was young and nervous, his eyeballs rolled back in his head and his body began jerking. Smelling salts halted it because he had passed out. He sat up with a frightened look but that was it..............That was 14 years ago and he never had it happen again that I know of.

You just might be right. I never would have thought of it until reading your post.

Re: Desperately seeking advise!!!!

Yes, we checked him with his first week of seizures. We actually pulled three blood samples. One sample when he was fine for a base line. A sample when he had a seizure, then a third sample an hour after the seizure. All blood work was normal. Thank you!
