Swimming in pool after breeding

I did several AI's with my bitch and my male, the last one was done on Thursday, which was day 16. He was no longer interested in her the next day, yesterday, day 17. I am staying where there is a large, clean, well-maintained pool, and she LOVES to swim.
What is the prevailing wisdom about swimming in a clean pool after breeding? Is there a waiting period recommended? I waited two days, is that long enough?
Please let me know what your experience has been, TIA!

Re: Swimming in pool after breeding

Personally, I wouldn't let my bitch swim after breeding. I don't want water in her vagina, esp. if her cervix "may" still be open. JMO, ( and I am a medical professional.)

Re: Swimming in pool after breeding

When does the cervix close? I have heard varying things about that, most saying the cervix closes as soon as they come out of heat?

Re: Swimming in pool after breeding

I personally know someone who competed in swimming at the national level. She was in swim practice when she started having contractions. She had a beautiful baby - at the hospital.

Re: Swimming in pool after breeding

I was advised not to swim after insemination and not to let her jump off the sides of the pool after 20 days post insemination, because this is the time that attachment is made.

Re: Swimming in pool after breeding

How long after insemination should they not swim?
I've heard everything from right away, to two weeks, to everything in between.

Don't forget, it you're in a pool it probably has been treated with Chlorine. That will kill even the good bacteria in the vaginal track.

Personally, I would say she could swim about 6 weeks after the pups are born. I'm just super cautious.

Re: Swimming in pool after breeding

I bred my girl to a stud dog owned by a long time breeder who lived by the ocean.

She was bred, then we went to the ocean. She swam.

Had 13 puppies 9 weeks later. All healthy. I hate to think some of the semen got washed out ;)

Re: Swimming in pool after breeding

I just spoke to a reproductive specialist yesterday about this. She said it really depends on the bitch when the cervix closes, some are immediately when they come out of heat, and some take up to 2 weeks or more.
I told her that my bitch came out of heat within about 12 hours after the last breeding, my male was interested in her that afternoon, then not at all early the next morning. She said then her cervix probably closed at that point, but to wait a week after just to be sure.
The week is up today, it's a warm day, and we're going swimming in the pool!
