Beta Strep Infection

One of my girls missed getting pregnant a couple of times so I had the vet run some tests. He said that she has a Beta Strep infection. He treated her with anti-biotics at the time and said to treat her again when I breed her. He said this is caused by being bred. I wanted to see if anyone else has had any experience with this and what they can tell me. Does this go away? Can she be naturally bred, or could it affect the stud dog? Is it caused by breeding, or could something else cause it? She has only been bred to one male, and his owner said that he is fine. Will she need to be treated each time she is bred? Is there any danger to the puppies? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Beta Strep Infection

Sorry, I do not know much about this with dogs but do
know it's very common with humans. Follow your vet's advice and you should be fine. It could only be an issue this time around, however, some humans' pH makes them more susceptible to it. So this might be the same with dogs, just have her checked with first progesterone test next time and see if she's has an issue.

In humans, usually when it's treated just as you describe - at onset of infection and just prior to delivery, it's doesn't cause any problems to mom or baby. All the best!

Re: Beta Strep Infection

Yes, the mom will need to be treated with antibiotics prior to whelping and during; until she is done whelping I believe. I know women are tested a few days before the due date and put on antibiotics for the duration of the delivery. I do wonder about puppies migrating to the back end area which they do and if mom is a "shedder" of this bacteria then maybe the puppies could pick up infection from her. Perhaps she WILL need to be on an antibiotic for the duration of nursing. I would ask a veterinary infectious disease specialist at Cornell.
