No sperm, ? Retrograde ejaculate

Hoping for some light at the end of the tunnel. We have a young 15 month old boy who has been collected 3 times for practice. Each time we looked under the microscope and nada, nothing, no sperm. Nothing dead or parts ? I don't have any experience with retrograde ejaculation but have heard of it happening. Anyone else have a you boy come back around as they mature? This boy is very immature.

Re: No sperm, ? Retrograde ejaculate

Are you saying there is absolutely no semen or no sperm within any of the fractions of the semen?

A problem with the prostate may be causing retrograde ejaculation. Are you going to a repro with this young boy? If not I suggest you do. A repro should be able to figure out why this is happening with testing.

Re: No sperm, ? Retrograde ejaculate

Even without a teaser bitch, a 15 month old boy should be producing some sperm in his ejaculate. Is the fluid clear? Any white cloudiness at all? Yellowish tinge would indicate urine in the fluid. Is there a familial history of sterility? You need a good repro vet and a full work up including thorough physical exam.

He is a lovely boy with no history of this in his pedigree. No, no parts, pieces or dead sperm in the collection. Even spun it down. Cloudy but not milky.....appointment is made at the repro but still worried.Used a teaser bitch too. Libido was there...

I'm sure they will culture his semen, he could have any type of bacterial or viral infection or perhaps never was fertile. The repro will help you figure that out if possible. Even an immature 8-10 month old should have sperm in his semen and probably earlier, at 6 months or younger. There is a reason the AKC won't allow litters to be registered from young age males. They do create sperm in their ejaculate; mature or immature boys.

Why are you calling it retrograde ejaculation? There was semen without sperm correct? If it were retrograde, I would imagine he would have no semen at all and it was all going in the wrong direction perhaps into his bladder. That's why I asked if there was any semen or just no sperm within his semen. Did your vet call it retrograde ejaculation or just you are?

Here is an article you might like to read. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18675452

Good luck with the repro specialist. Post when you have answers please. Others may learn from your experience.

Re: No sperm, ? Retrograde ejaculate

Yes go to a Repro vet. One way to test for retrograde vs sterile is to check the Alkp (a normal liver enzyme in the chemistry of the body) levels in the ejaculate - if it is low the dog is sterile and if it's high then retrograde. Easy test - collect a sperm sample and send it away to where ever you do your chemistry tests. We did it routinely on all dogs that had aspermatic collections when I worked in the Vet clinic.

I think the % signs need to be removed and just a space entered instead from the looks of it on my computer. If anyone would like me to email them a copy of a researched article on this procedure by the same author let me know. I can also send a copy of the above article too.
