Suggestions to help a new junior handler

Could any of you offer any suggestions for the brand new junior handler? - She goes to handling classes with her young labrador, but we would like to know what kinds of questions the judges out there are asking.

Do they ask questions about the Lab Standard?
Do they ask about care of dogs in general?
Do they ask about historic labradors?

Thanks in advance

Re: Suggestions to help a new junior handler

No questions at all are asked of junior handlers in the US. Canada is different. Check out the AKC web page http://classic.akc.org/kids_juniors/jr_getting_started.cfm to start. I'd be happy to help with any other questions, either post here or e-mail me.

This is why I prefer the UKC for juniors. It actually teaches the juniors about the dogs they are handling. They are required to know dog anatomy, basic information about dogs, specific details about their breed, while also needing to know all the different movement patterns in the ring (triangle, "L", "T" ). It also teaches our young junior handlers about sportsmanship and camaraderie. I once saw a best junior handler competition come down to the child who clapped for the others won as the tie breaker! I know many people have negative feelings towards the UKC but hands down I think their junior program is superb. A great place for a new junior to learn and to continue to learn.

Re: Suggestions to help a new junior handler

UKC, Canada, and 4H all have questions. AKC is modeled like being a handler in the group ring, and if you don't know about your breed, anatomy, care, etc. you won't be successful, it's just more subtle. They are all good programs and any junior can be in one or all of them. I think the most limiting factor would be finding shows nearby. Probably more opportunities with AKC but also more competition. AAR, encourage the junior to participate wherever possible no matter what organization sponsors the competition.
