Sales tax on puppies

I claim all of my puppy sales as income on my taxes, but I never thought about sales tax before. Someone I know in Pennsylvania was just contacted by the state about not paying sales tax and they were given a huge bill for thousands of dollars for unpaid sales taxes. I was just wondering what other breeders do? Do you charge sales tax on puppies? I don't even know how to get started. I guess I need to talk to a tax person.

Re: Sales tax on puppies

It depends on the laws in your state. When I lived in Iowa, I had a sales tax permit, collected and paid the sales tax to the state quarterly.

I have recenlty moved to a state that does not consider animals taxable.

Yes you need to talk to a tax person for the state you are in.

Re: Sales tax on puppies

I think most states require sales tax on animal sales. We include sales tax in our puppies cost. Then we send in the tax monthly. You can either charge sales tax on top of the pups cost or include it in the price. If you get caught without charging sales tax, you are responsible for all sales you did not collect the tax from.

Re: Sales tax on puppies

Laws vary from state to state. In SC we do not have to charge as it is considered agricultural revenue.
