River Fowey, Cornwall

Fished here for one week, beginning 12.6.04. River is almost totally tree-lined on both banks, so short side-casts were the order of the day (night!). I caught three fish, all around the two pound mark, two on a large surface lure, and one on a black and silver two-inch snake, fished high in the water.

My friends also caught fish, one at 6lbs 13oz(which will appear in a future issue of Today's Flyfisher)and another at 4lbs 13oz. They caught thiers ona teal, blue and silver tandem, on sinking leaders.

Some monster fish were lost. I had an absolutely savage take on the surface lure, which nearly pulled the rod out of my hand!!

Great sport!

Ok That's Sorted Next Meet is in Cornwall lol

Hi Mate, That's brilliant news, see there is hope for all of us, well done and keep it up,

where the fish showing or not?

what colour was the river?

was it coming down from a spate ?

so many bloody questions lol.

How far from Swansea is Cornwall lol.

Don't mention the word " MEET" because you will attract other nutters namely DB, JT, PD and Hoppy, those buggers will go anywhere for a night on the water lol. ATB. Reeco

Re: River Fowey, Cornwall

Hi Reeco, the river was much smaller than I anticipated, and heavily tree-lined, making overhead casting impossible in most places. Very, very short side casts, with sinking leaders, were the most productive (especially for the other two guys!!) but I favoured simple floating line. The river was clear, but surprisingly deep! The fish were mainly fresh-run, and showed every night. Some of the noises made my heart jump on occasion - there were some very seriously big sea-trout around, one of which hit me on a three-inch surface lure and literally almost pulled the rod out of my hand. Few serious splashes later it was gone, leaving two of us wondering just how big it was! I was fishing the stretch owned by Paul Elliot at Wainsford House. Best beats were 'Cattle Run' and 'Kingfisher'. Week was an annual event run by Ian Moutter (has website) and I for one, have already booked my place for next June!
Seriously worth a visit!

Re: River Fowey, Cornwall

Hugh,

I lost my biggest sea trout on Kingfisher pool, Geoff from Wainsford saw it the following morning and estimated it was 16lbs+++. I still have nightmares about that fish!

Fowey - is a cracking river and Paul is brilliant, i will be there summer 05 for another week at those peal!

FAO Hugh and Hoppy
Hi Both, Hugh, God that hasn't half wet my apetite for tonight lol, it sounded as if you really enjoyed yourself, and it's always good reading, I can't wait until I write my 1st report that reads My First Sewin or Salmon, I know it will happen, it not so much as if but a matter of when.

Hoppy, was that big fish the one you were talking about on our weekend on the Teifi ?

Keep on keeping on Lads.

If you fish it, they will come. ATB. Reeco
