Result

Baldock Templars 2 - 5 Hitchin Town

Match Report

Football followers recognise the regular goal scoring contributions of a forward returning with the opposition to haunt his old colleagues. Perhaps so keen were Templars to dispel the notion, by successfully containing Lewis, that they left the door ajar for his new Hitchin team mates.

From two early goals down Templars drew level with a pair of excellent strikes from Beck, either side of half time. He was denied his hat trick by a post. Templars were playing excellent flowing, passing football at this time. Angus was secure in goal. Steven, Gregory, Robert and Joseph were a solid defensive unit. Adam and Ashley linked well on the right and Callum and George did likewise on the left. Ben, Max and James provided the central support for Beck.

Unfortunately, the purple patch fizzled out when Baldock fell behind to a cracker of a free kick. After that Hitchin seemed to find easy pickings with another two goals in a tame end to the season. Beck’s finishing skills won him Man of the Match.

Hatfield Youth U11

Result

Hatfield Youth 6 - 1 Baldock Templars

Match Report

For ten Templars, ten out of ten for effort. Absentees meant that a plucky ten played a full match, on a warm afternoon, a player short. They upped the work rate to compensate and took the lead. After good work from Ashley and George, Beck’s shot was clawed over (or was it off?) the line by a desperate Hatfield keeper but Beck’s immediate celebration was enough to convince the ref. That was a rare foray and Hatfield pressure built. Callum had to lend support to Joseph to contain a pacey, tricky Norwich City-based winger. Max was also having to drop deep to support Robert, Gregory and Steven. Angus pulled off a remarkable double save to draw appreciation from all around the pitch. This fabulous effort meant that the defences were breached only once by half time.

In the second period tiredness played a big part. The depleted Templars leaked five goals. At the other end Ashley typified his Man of the Match tireless performance, up and down the pitch, by firing in a super cross that the keeper could not hold. If only there had been an eleventh player. At the death Templars were still giving it their all. It lifted the fans' spirits to see defensive progress as brave, forceful headers from Robert and Steven cleared the danger from late corners. On this occasion it was much more appropriate to concentrate on these positives and not look to the result.

Match Vs

BSCFC Rangers U11

Result

Baldock Templars 1 - 9 BSCFC Rangers

Match Report

BSCFC Rangers were a cut above Templars. The Baldock boys showed some bottle but were tactically naïve against a swift, technically adept side. By sitting with five players deep, BSCFC could dictate play from their numerical superiority in the middle of the park. Rarely did Templars get past them to progress into the opposition half. Even Adam’s goal came from a strong punt, from well out, that kicked off the pitch to deceive the keeper. BSCFC worked as a team to craft nine goals. Their slick, swift play sliced through a light midfield – not a description that fits Ben, who was Man of the Match for his efforts to break up play.

Match Vs

Bedwell Rangers Reds

Result

Baldock Templars 2 - 4 Bedwell Rangers

Match Report

Templars can be hard to fathom. Once again they turned in a highly creditable second period performance to ‘win’ the half (and against a top side). By that time, however, the game had gone away from them. In the first period, they displayed the bad habits of not adequately closing players down, not attacking the ball, and not anticipating the flow of the game. Why it should all suddenly click in the second half is hard to tell. It did though and the regular back five of Angus, Steven, Joseph, Gregory and Robert each made telling contributions. Across the middle Ben, Max, Adam, Sam and Callum were adventurous or defensive as needed. George, Beck and Ashley were a handful for the Bedwell defence. Beck’s close control worked two smart goals – one from each peg. Sam had a good shot well saved and Max nearly caught out the keeper with a looping shot. It was hard to select a Man of the Match from this team display but it was awarded to Ashley. He has added a deadly corner kick to his repertoire, which signified progress that the fans were happy to applaud.

Match Report

Why has it taken 10 days to post a brief match report? Answer: I was searching for inspiration having been brought up with the edict that ‘if one doesn’t have owt good to say then one says nowt’. George played a good cross field ball for Ashley to race onto and finish. Callum worked hard all game to deserve the award of Man of the Match. That’s all folks!

Match Vs

St Neots Town Youth

Result

Baldock Templars 7 - 1 St Neots Town Youth

Match Report

Tremendous Templars trust teamwork to triumph. From back to front and flank to flank Templars were terrific. The game finished as mostly one-way traffic and whilst the boys could then enjoy a few flicks and tricks the fans’ delight was at the maturity of the play throughout the game. When a defender broke from the solid line, someone would cover. If the wingers hared past the opposition there was support on hand. Midfielders offered movement at set plays. Forwards chose decisively when to pass and when to shoot.

“Don’t change it: keep playing like you did in the first period” was coach Graham’s half time pep talk to the boys, even though they trailed 1-0 to a thunderous St Neots’ strike. The half had been even with Templars creating great openings but not testing the keeper. At the other end Angus was in splendid action against further, fierce shooting from range. In the past Templars have lost heart and shape in situations like this but they followed the instructions.

The reward was seven second half goals – a hat trick from Beck, on his return from injury, a brace from George and one each from Sam and Adam. Singling out the goal-scorers over any of the outfield players would be unjust. Steven, Gregory, Robert, Joseph, Callum, Max, Ashley, James played equally well and contributed just as much. Man of the Match, therefore, reflected the super showing from Angus in the first half. His saves preserved the confidence of the team to go out and grab the game by the scruff of the neck.

Match Vs

Roebuck Wanderers (Home)

Result

2 - 5 (lost)

Match Report

Flashes of brilliance were in evidence today, but unfortunately, they were few and far between.
Two nil down in the first 10 minutes, the Knight's could have turned things around midway through the first half, when Michael Chapman scored a great header from a well taken corner. This was followed by a fantastic free-kick from skipper Conor Clarke, which snaked one way then the other, testing the away team’s keeper. The Wanderers were visibly shaken and looked nervous at the back. Regrettably, the Knights were unable to capitalise on this and the Wanderers gathered themselves together and scored two more before the break. This could have been more, but for some great tackling from centre half Callum Thomas.
Wanderers scored again after the re-start, but the Knights were unlucky when Jordan Brights strike hit the post soon after. Midway through the second half and Michael Chapman's persistence saw him get his second, when the Wanderers failed to clear the ball from defence. Wanderers extended their lead with a fifth soon after.
The remainder of the match saw the Knights at their very best, begging the question – if they had started the game as they finished it, what would the score line have been?
Midfield dynamo and goal hero Michael Chapman was in sensational form today, earning him the MotM trophy.

Apollo Yth

Result

Baldock 0 Apollo 5

Match Report

As the scoreline suggests the likely league champions Apollo, took the three points. We battled on relenetlessly against a much better side, outplayed but not out fought. After the ugly scenes reported after our league cup clash, I had originally declined to play Apollo again until a league appointed referee was found. A referee, Jeff Durrant took the fixture and he kept a very close eye on any incidents - earning a 100 out of 100. To Apollo's credit they seemed to take on board my message to their secretary - most teams don't expect to have their referee abused from start to finish nor their players intimidated and threatened and this game passed off without incident. The visiting goalie who had little to do all afternoon enjoyed a well earned cigarette, as he left the pitch at then end of the game. Not many games left in this season

Match Vs

St Neots Town Youth

Result

St Neots Town Youth 5 - 2 Baldock Templars

Match Report

Against St Neots, Templars plugged the gaps and found their creativity too late to save more than pride. They were four goals down at half time to a team that buried their chances. Angus had no chance to save any of the goals but could keep spirits high in the winter cold by pulling off a remarkable double save. The four man defence struggled to hold a unified line and St Neots’ attackers were able to drift cannily to gain a yard head start and run through on goal. Perhaps a ‘libero’ is the answer. In other respects Greg, Robert, Joe and Steven, to be replaced by Adam, did well in making crucial tackles. One perhaps needed to step forward out of the line, rather than drift deeper, in order to harry and break up the play. At the other end Templars hit the post but the boys were a little shot shy when the chances arose.

The second half was a happier affair. Although a fifth was conceded early on Templars rallied to ‘win’ the half. When the boys concentrate on simple pass and move they look polished. When they delay the pass they are easily picked off. Slick passing worked a number of clear openings for George, Max and Steven. Sam, Ben and Ashley all contributed positive attacking balls from the middle of the park. Callum used width very well and crossed accurately. Late on and by now practised, George and Steven netted neatly.

It was a strong performance from the depleted squad. All the Templars looked eager, despite the conditions, none more so than George who showed industry and skill to secure the Man of the Match award.
