The google search info I got was this:
1 - 25 gm syringe of the horse wormer == 1100 lb horse
1 - 25 gm syringe of the horse wormer == only a 110 lb dog.
Recommended protocol for worming with Panacur is to worm the dogs three days in a row.
PANACUR PASTE WORMER is given all the time by many breeders. The paste in this form supplies the exact same amount of medication (i.e. Fenbendazole)) as the granules supplied by a small animal vet (given you follow the "recipes"), so no reason to expect any side effects or adverse reaction just because paste over granules was given. (And you can, BTW, get the granules sold for foals which are the same.) And since Panacur is recommended to clear pregnant bitches of their roundworm load, a practice routinely occurring in many breeds/by many breeders, it cannot be considered a high risk drug by any standards? Naturally what matters as to side effects is (1) the health of the dog, (2) the genetic status of the dog, (3) the skill of the administer as to (a) proper dosage & (b) the true state of health of the dog to be wormed. Each equine paste tube worms a 110 lb. dog, & with ten 'clicks' per tube, you add one 'push' for about ever ten lbs (11 lb per click) for dogs over 110 lbs. & take off @ 11 lbs. per click for dogs under 110. That's SOP anyway AFAIK. The exact dosage for dogs is 50 mg/kg SID x 3 days. For horses it's 5 mg/kg, hence the 1110 horse=110 dog as to paste wormer amounts.
Why not use a wormer that you know is safe for dogs instead of worrying about this? Strongid is what I use. I think the dosage is .2 ml per lb.
I would not trust everything I read on the internet - just ask your vet. If you don't trust them, time for a new one
panacur / safe guard are the same meds. They come in different compounds for different species.
For a fact - for the past 15 years we have given liquid cattle/ goat safe guard at 1cc per 5 lbs to pups as young as 4 weeks.
For a fact - my small animal vet, breeder of great danes, rider of cutting horses says she uses the cattle paste wormer at 4 clicks her 100 lb dog, which is 4 times the dosage for cattle.
it is very safe, very hard to overdose and been used for decades with out problems. But if owners cant figure our dosages by reading and math they should stick to the canine versions figured out for them.
in some area vets are not on every corner. And although we would like to think they know it all, this is not the case in 99% of the vets. the best ones continue to learn way past vet school.
we are in rural area, I have three vet office I work with in a 80 mile radius. my local vet does not have the knowledge to handle new technology and refuses to learn, one that is 80 miles is always learning and up to date on new info.
I use them to fit my needs
I give 100 horse-pounds dosage for every 10 dog-pounds. I repeat this over 3 days. So, for an 80 pound dog, I would give 800 lb. horse Panacur paste dose each day, so you'd need 2400 horse-pounds for that dog. If you have worming issues, maybe 5 days. I do it every 1 to 2 years for each dog just in case they've picked something up. Horse.com has the Panacur PowerPac which has 5 double-size (2400 or 2500 horse-pound dose) tubes. Hope this helps.
My doG, please, can you be any more a drama queen about this stuff ? I never post any information about dosing unless I have experience with it using it on my own dogs. Worming is a pretty general practice among breeders and using horse paste and goat and cattle wormer is mainstream with many breeders.
And yes, I do take it upon myself to do my own Emergency C-Sections when needed. I don't see any reason to pay my incompetent vet when I can do it myself
Why is everyone using the horse paste? I use Safeguard for Cattle (large bottle) or goats (small bottle). .. one cc per 5 pounds. One of my dogs will not take it on her food, so I mix up some sugar water. Then in a large syringe FIRST I draw up her dosage of Safeguard and then enough of the sweetened water to mask the taste. I then give it to her orally.
This is a three day treatment.
You can get all this stuff at Tractor Barn in my area.
It's cheap.
