Eye Issue - Help Needed

About 10 days ago, I noticed the right eye of my 2 year old black bitch didn't look right -- the outside corner/lower lid looked white/grayish, like the hair had been rubbed away. I thought it might have been an insect bite but it didn't improve. She wasn't rubbing it, nor seemed bothered by it at all. I took her to my vet Tuesday who found nothing wrong -- no cyst or injury of any sort -- but some minor inflamation. He gave me a medicated eye ointment to apply 2 times a day. That was 4 days ago and there seems to be no improvement. Has anyone had any experience with this kind of condition? She's has a CERF registration and the vet found no injury. Should I take her to an AVCO vet?

Re: Eye Issue - Help Needed

When dealing with the eyes I would go to a specialist. It isn't much more expensive than a regular vet and you wouldn't be second guessing yourself.

Re: Eye Issue - Help Needed

What would you do if you had the same problem? Go to your internist or your opthamologist? That should give you the correct answer.

If it were my bitch, she would be going to an ACVO as Kris said. I think your regular vet would send you in that direction anyway so you're avoiding 1 extra visit. Good Luck.

Re: Eye Issue - Help Needed

I had a bitch who injured an eye last summer; her eye was irritated, it then turned bluish white, my vet said the eye was dead, and needed to be removed; I took her to the opthamologist for an emergency appt., he looked at her eye and said she had a puncture wound and foreign body inside the eye, he did surgery and removed a piece of grass about 1 inch long, which had penetrated her lens! she just had her annual exam, and has scarring/cataract in lens at site of injury, but passed her CERF since it is not genetic.
so, long story short, take your dog to the opthamologist!

Re: Eye Issue - Help Needed

Am I correct that this area you're talking about is on her skin, not the eyeball itself?

Sometimes the fur around eyes get a bit moth-eaten due to hormones, etc, like a bit of demodex/scurf. I don't think I'd be overly concerned at this point.

Yes -- it is the skin that is whitesh-grayish in appearance around the lower lid and outside corner. It's not the eye ball. The eye itself looks fine -- not red or blood shot. If I thought her eye was injured, I would certainly have taken her directly to an AVCO vet. There does now seem to be some improvement -- the hair is starting to "grow" back -- it does look better. I stopped the medication a day ago as it didn't seem to be helping. I'm going to speak with the vet tomorrow who saw her last week.

Thanks very much to all who responded!
