Cost of OCD repair

I am wondering what average cost of OCD repair is. 10 month old pup will be going to local University for an eval. We sent pup home at 6 months with what seemed to be Pano - family wanted him and understood treatment. Now vet is thinking OCD. We feel we should cover at least part of the cost of repair and since we've never dealt with this, are wondering price.

Pup has been rested since 6 months and given glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and baby ASA with no improvement. Woman in family is a retired surgical nurse and is following treament suggests by my vet to a T.

Hock

Re: Cost of OCD repair

I've been told up to $3000, depending on how severe. Saying that, my ortho specialist also recommended not to do surgery. Definitely use joint supplements.

Re: Cost of OCD repair

Usually with the hock it is best to leave alone and not do surgery, it is the worst joint to work on and surgery could just make it worse. Pain management through meds and limiting activity may be the better way to go.

Re: Cost of OCD repair

The cost is free. Don't do surgery on the hock.

Re: Cost of OCD repair

For the very first time I produced an OCD puppy (both rear hocks). After getting over the shock we began working with 2 vets (1 regular, 1 ortho) to give the puppy the best quality of life we could. We are using cold laser therapy, following the Great Dane Lady HOD diet recommendations including supplements (http://www.greatdanelady.com/articles/feed_program_for_ocd_repair.htm) and we are not resting the puppy. We started out resting and it had no effect, so the OCD theory appears to be either rest or exercise! We are opting not to do surgery due to the mixed results obtained. We are also using acupuncture and water therapy (warm water swimming). The puppy has seen reduced swelling, increased range of motion and both owner and vets are thrilled with the results they are seeing. As the breeder I am finding that non-traditional methods can give great results.

If you can find an ortho vet with arthroscopic equipment it can do wonders for hocks. Univ of Fl can do it and so can Cornell. One of our local vet specialty practices here in Charleston also does it.

This is encouraging, pup goes to Michigan State University for an evaluation on October 3. Last night owner told me that MSU had mentioned arthroscopic treatment to her.

So we are covering cost up to purchase of puppy which was $1200. Does that sound fair to others? Do you think we're should give more? Pup had it on leaving us, I offered to refund at that point and keep pup as I thought it was Pano and would just rest pup until Pano was gone.

We opted not to do surgery, hocked fused on its own over time, 8 years later he is still going strong.

Re: Cost of OCD repair

I have a 5 1/2 year old boy named Wilson. He was diagnosed with OCD in both Hocks - that was when he was 18 months old.

His Orthopedic Specialist said it is inherited - so don't breed him, don't show him and don't encorage ruff and tumble exercise. Vet recommended joint supplements - and perscribed pain meds for bad days.

We neutered him, and use Pro-Plan Weight Control Formula with great results - Wilson in the show ring would easily carry 105 pounds - he is a big dog. We have him at 90 pounds.

Sincetaking weight off of him, he hasn't limped a bit - you can easily see the deformity of his hind hocks however. He does run around with our other lab boys - but seems to know when to quit.

I think $1200.00 is genereous, our breeder offered nothing - I also think the surgery is a real question mark in my mind. Like all things - new better treatments are coming along frequently.

To recap, I think weight control has a lot to do with long term good results.

Re: Cost of OCD repair

We had our first case of OCD hocks back in 2009, puppy was sold to companion home. When puppy was around 5 months old, he slipped on wet driveway which was enough to knock those little fragment chips loose in the little guy's hocks.
The family put off taking their boy into a specialist for a couple months but when they did they discovered OCD on the digitals. I had their vet sent the digitals to a well known radiologist here in Seattle area. 2nd opinion revealed OCD hocks. The family decided to do surgery on their young dog's one hock and if that went well, they may decide to do the 2nd hock. Their vet did use non invasive ortho surgery, they followed the vet's post therapy. Puppy's hock healed beautifully though they couldn't afford to do the dog's 2nd hock. They have him on some good joint supplement and manage his pain through their vet. I sent them a check in the amount they paid me for their puppy which helped with the surgery but by no means did it cover the entire surgery which I believe they paid $1600 for one hock. They had purchased pet insurance when this puppy was first adopted but they cancelled shortly before the youngster's OCD presented itself. Bad luck.
