Bleeding 4.5 weeks after whelping

Happy Easter to my Peeps!

I am wondering if someone could tell me if I should be concerned about this or not. My girl whelped a litter of 8 four and a half weeks ago. They were not unusually large, 14.5 to 15.5 ounces at birth and her delivery time for 8 was 5.5 hrs. So she had no trouble delivering and all placentas presented. Her discharge after delivery for the last 3.5 weeks was darker brown as expected and then 1 week ago it started to be redder like new blood. She is nursing less as I have started the pups on gruel. After she does nurse she spots (fifty cent size spot). I am not concerned about the timing of that as she is still contracting when they suck from her, but last night and this morning she spotted 2 to 3 hours after nursing,it was fresh colored blood and a little larger than usual. It did not continue, just a few larger spots. No fever, not lethargic, no odor from her vulva which has shrunk to a normal size . Everything seems very normal for this period after puppies except the time and the blood color.. Anyone ever have this? I have never had a bitch bleed more than 4 weeks after whelping. I will call my vet tomorrow, but since they are not repro vets, I always like to get like scenarios from my breeder peers. Thank you in advance.

Re: Bleeding 4.5 weeks after whelping

I've had my bitches spotting for quite a while longer than your girl! never been any problem.

Re: Bleeding 4.5 weeks after whelping

I had a bitch do this not even a week from whelping, and it got pretty serious very quickly. She was spotting a large amount (6" round bright red blood spot on the blanket) 3-4 times a night, took her in to the vet and she was losing blood. Her pcv was going down daily for three days. The repro specialist, the emergency doctor, two internal medicine specialists, and the regular vet all recommended spaying her. I did an ultrasound, she had a large blood clot, the size of my palm, in her uterus, but the blood just kept coming. Had a surgeon do an exploratory on her, and it was determined to be subinvolution of the placental sites. This means the uterus was not clamping down, and the placental sites remained open and bleeding. We tried multiple oxytocin injections, and flushing her uterus with cold saline to potentially stop the bleeding, nothing worked, so I went ahead with the spay. Her uterus was huge and looked like raw hamburger after 5 days of bleeding. It caused problems with the co-breeder, but I don't regret spaying her, it saved her life.
The repro specialist did say that some bitches spot blood for up to 13 weeks, but in my case it was extreme and was a problem for the bitch. You just have to weigh each case, but saving the bitch's life in extreme situations is the way to go.

It sounds like SIPS, SubInvolution of Placental Sites. I would see a reproduciton specialist about it if it continues.
