Posterior Cataracts

I need some constructive advise from breeders who have been breeding long enough to have experience in dealing with Posterior Cataracts in their lines. I've had other eye issues pop up here and there but never Posterior Cataracts, until recently when we took 3 of our girls in for annual eye cerfs. Our 18 month old girl passed her eyes as a puppy but this time the dr found Posterior Cataracts in both eyes. He wouldn't pass her of course. I was wondering if anyone has ever bred a dog with this issue and go on to produce normal eyed puppies through future generations by using stud dogs who are known to not have cataract issues in his lines ?

Re: Posterior Cataracts

yes, I had this on a very nice girl, and made the decision to use her. her puppies were clear, as were her grandpuppies. with TVD and other major issues that effect the health of our dogs, I decided this was a small enough issue to decide to use her anyway......

Re: Posterior Cataracts

Now I know what so many long time breeders had been talking about, " Pick your poison " when it comes to things that crop up in your lines and things you are willing to live with. So heart breaking to start all over with a different line when you back yourself in a corner due to your picks not working out.

me too...

Her puppies were clear? What about when those puppies grew up? Dogs often don't show signs of blindness until it's complete. Blindness is not a small issue. I would follow the opinion of the specialist.

Re: Posterior Cataracts

My cerf dr said that posterior cataracts do not cause blindness and they are different than Juvenile cataracts. I thought that posterior cataracts used to be " Breeders Option on the Cerf report but not any more.
