The information is on the UK government site, under schools statutary guidance. I tried cutting and pasting but it didn't work, so am typing here for you and hope I have it correct:

Have a look on there and under the heading 'Alternative provision'. There is a document or pdf file you can read.
It outlines ehat schools must do if a child cannot attend mainstream school.
